Safari on the Sonoma Serengeti

May 1, 2014

Giraffe on the Serengeti

I’ve always dreamed of visiting Africa and going on safari. As a child, my earliest memory of Africa was watching the movie Lost In the Desert (also known as Dirkie) and experiencing a deep yearning to go visit this great country, full of adventures and wild animals. Growing up, two of my favorite movies were and still are The Lion King and The Gods Must Be Crazy. As an adult, I’ve watched Out of Africa and Gorillas in the Mist more times than I can count. If you’re like me, Africa is very high on your list of places to visit. I haven’t been to Africa yet, but it makes for a pleasant daydream to lose myself into.

Wildlife in Africa!

So imagine my surprise when I discovered that we have our very own Serengeti in Santa Rosa, California, just a short 2 hour drive from the Bay Area. Set in the picturesque wine country of Sonoma county, Safari West boasts 400 acres of savannah and wilderness and is home to over 80 species and 800 animals and birds. Cheetah, Giraffe, Lemurs, Addax, Cape Buffalo and Zebra are just a few of the many animals that live in their natural habitat at this wildlife preserve. Safari West was founded in 1989 by Peter and Nancy Lang who are the current owners and live there. Safari West has evolved into a world class wildlife preserve that aims to teach about conservation through education, with the help of safari tours, hikes and guided wildlife encounters. Visitors at Safari West can experience everything reminiscent of an adventure in Africa. Go on an open-top jeep safari of the wildlife preserve, get up close to animals in their natural habitat and stay the night in an authentic African tent, drifting off to sleep while listening to the sounds of wild animals and birds all around you.

I might not be headed to Africa this weekend, but Safari West in Sonoma county promises to be the next best thing. Looking forward to glamping, going on safari, learning all about African wildlife and exciting adventures at Safari West!
